Isabella stared at the man in front of her and realised just how unfair she had been. Nicholas had done all the giving, and she had taken it gladly with no thought of his feelings, or indeed any reciprocation.

“I think, my lord,” she said and grinned before she outlined his lips with her finger. She’d enjoyed him doing it to her, so why should the enjoyment not be mutual? “I think you overthink. So much indeed, that I worry you might not agree to my request.” She tilted her head to one side in query. “Or is it a plea, I wonder? Perhaps it is both.”

Nicholas drew her finger into his mouth and suckled, hard.

Isabella gasped.

“Ni…ch…olas.”

He lifted his head and did the raised eyebrow query expression she loved. “Yes?”

“You…”

“I?”

He wasn’t going to help her. Isabella slowly undid his waistcoat buttons and then unpinned the simple gold bar in his cravat. “I think you are overdressed, my lord.” She took a deep breath and unwound the yard of cloth. Grasped both his hands and twisted the material around his wrists. “I hope you have more cravats, I fear this one may soon appear beyond redemption.”

“I have plenty.” He stood and waited.

Only by his heightened colour and the rapid beat of the pulse at the base of his throat could she tell he was affected.

Please let it be in a positive way.

“Ah, good.” Isabella paused and then decided to be honest, open, and say what she wanted. “Oh, tarnation, my lord. I think you better take me to bed and make me yours. Then you’ll see just how much I want you as you and no one else.”

Now she understood the expression, even the air stood still.
